Invented in the 1980s, these devices will probably eventually replace the tape measures we all have in our tool box or junk drawer. Tape measure markings can include inch and centimeter scales, as well as specialty construction tapes that have only millimeters or have special markings for spacing wall studs and floor joists.Īnd now the tape measure is slowly being replaced by digital tape measures which use lasers instead of a physical tape. The first United States patent for a tape measure that would retract the tape with the use of a spring was granted in 1864. In 2023, the Tug of War World Championship will take place in Switzerland in September. It is played at religious festivals, fertility celebrations, and competitions like the Highland Games and the World Games. Today, tug of war is a featured event in countries around the world. Tug of war was an event in the original Olympic Games (held between 776 BC and 393 AD) and also appeared in the modern Olympics from 1900 to 1920. In the 8th century BC, Homer wrote in the Iliad that Zeus told his fellow gods that if they were on the opposite end of a chain from him that all of them combined could not pull him out of place, but that he could pull all of them together, as well as the land and sea beneath them. The Greeks have a long history with tug of war. In China, the teams would use enormous ropes with up to 500 people competing for each team and drummers keeping up their enthusiasm. At Angkor Wat in Cambodia, there is a carving showing a tug of war in progress that dates to the 12th century. ![]() Tug of war was used for strength training for armies in China, India, Egypt, and Greece. Like many simple games that don't require a lot of equipment, tug of war is an ancient activity that appears in very different areas of the world. The name Rocky Road reflected both the chunky things in the ice cream and the fortunes of the American people, as the Great Depression began in 1929. Since marshmallows were only produced in large sizes at the time, Dreyer used his wife's sewing scissors to cut them up and determine the best size for their ice cream. This experimentation included determining the correct size of marshmallows to include in the ice cream. A lot of experimentation with ingredients was required to safely produce ice creams in large quantities. So why did it take so long to put chunky things in it?
